Full Version: Linking tasks in different subprojects

Hello,

Great that you started a Forum to allow users and CS Odessa to discuss the apps, much appreciated!

I have used CD Project 2 extensively and upgraded to version 3 the day it was released. Great update, taking away a lot of the lesser irritations.

One big difference between v2 and v3 is something I mis dearly:

CDP allows the creation of "portfolio's" of subprojects, each on their separate project sheet in the over all project file, all combined in a project sheet in which all those subproject are imported together. A killer feature that I have not seen in any project management app on Mac nor PC.

In v2 activities from one subproject could be linked to activities on another subproject. That is where it really becomes very, very valuable for me, managing different teams.
Opening a v2 file in v3 still shows those "cross-border" dependencies, but I have not been able to create new ones in v3, not in old files, not in new files.

Is that a bug? Or (please let it not be so) removed feature?

Thanks for any insights!

Mirko
Hello, Mirko!
Great that you have registered here! :)

As the new CD Project 3 was made on absolutely new base, this feature was removed, but only for some time. It will take some time, but will be restored in one of the updates.

Still you can do the following:
1. Insert Project into Project.
2. Cut the Project you have inserted
3. Create an extra-task in the previous Project
4. Paste the project you have cut into the extra-task
5. This task will stay at the end of the pasted Project (you may delete it).
6. You can make links between all the tasks and subtasks now:)

Have a great day!
Natalie,

Thanks for your fast reply!

Just to make sure I understand:
If I follow you procedure I get what I'd call a "flat" dependency of tasks, as the updates I would make to one of those re-created tasks will not show op in the Projects I created them from.

That is right, isn't it? Your method is a way to get all subprojects copied in a main project, but not linked, true?

Thanks,

Mirko
You are right!

You will be able to link subtasks of one project with subtasks of the other but it will not be shawn in the original project.

You're always welcome:)
Well, it is very obvious you are keeping a steady pace in developing CD Project, congratulations on shipping 3.2

I really like the new version, and especially the customization it offers for presenting the Gantt.

Right now I still do my planning in v2 (because of the reasons explained above), but when I share data I first open de file in v3 to bring some colour and quality in the output.
It is a workaround.

I hope v 3.3 solves my deep desire too!
Thank you!

Unfortunately the feature you desire was removed from the program at the instance of many users, for it made the program unstable. That is why we will not restore the feature untill we do not find the way to make it work properly.

Hope, this news will not upset you.

Have a happy easter! :)
Ok, if it makes the app unstable, I understand you need to disable it.

But it does not make me happy, as for me this really is THE killer feature of CD Project.
So please don't forget to keep it on the list!

And of course a Happy Easter to all at and in Odessa! And while I am at it, the rest of the world too!
Hello Mirko,
the easter was great, thank you! Hope so was yours:)

Be sure, your request will not be forgotten!

Have a pleasant Spring!;)
Hi All-

Just to add my voice and vote to Mirko's, I'd love to have the "linking between projects" enabled. I never used Version 2 or the Microsoft version, but now I understand why the documentation says this can be done when in fact it cannot (which is how I found this thread).

We are in the process of making a purchase decision, and this feature (or even knowing that it would be included sometime soon) would virtually put us over the top for CDP.

Thanks very much!

Yes, I have tried all Mac Project planning apps, own licenses to several, but this is a unique feature. I still keep version 2 installed alongside 3 for that reason. Although after having used the new version, there is a lot that I miss in v2!
